Our Season

Race by David Mamet

March 2 – 17, 2012

The Studio at Vertigo Theatre Centre

Starring: Andrew Moodie, Ryan Luhning, Monice Peter and Joel Cochrane

Directed by Kevin McKendrick

Multiple award-winning playwright/director David Mamet tackles America's most controversial topic in a provocative tale of sex, guilt and bold accusations. Two lawyers – one black, one white - and the firm’s young associate scramble to decide if they want to represent a wealthy white man accused of assaulting a black woman. RACE lures the audience into an enthralling web where “the dialogue is tasty, the confrontations spiky, and the observations more than occasionally biting” (Variety). Race may be the central theme, but the issues are more than skin deep as the debate delves into questions of sex, gender, and class.

“Mamet has deliberately created ambiguity at every turn in RACE, so it is impossible to know for sure who is telling the truth, and who is lying,” states Kevin McKendrick, the play’s director. “This stems from his burning desire to avoid giving us a neat, little drama about law and order, so that the ideas and incendiary language in the text will provoke argument about race. The more heated the discussion the better. The audience will be the judge and jury.”

RACE by David Mamet features Joel Cochrane (Charles Strickland), Ryan Luhning (Jack Lawson), Andrew Moodie (Henry Brown) and Monice Peter (Susan). The cast is directed by Kevin McKendrick, set & lighting design Nick Blais, costume design Deitra Kalyn, sound design Ian Kelly, Emma Brager, stage manager and assistant stage manager Brooklyn Ritchie.

RACE by David Mamet produced by Ground Zero Theatre (GZT) and Hit & Myth (H&M) plays March 2-17, Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8:00pm at The Studio at Vertigo Theatre Centre (base of the Calgary Tower.)

A Steady Rain

A Steady Rain by Keith Huff

May 4 – May 19, 2012

At MOTEL in the EPCORE Centre for the Performing Arts

Starring: Brian Jensen & Joel Cochrane

Directed by Kevin McKendrick

A Steady Rain explores love and rage on the streets of Chicago, as a routine domestic disturbance call sends two Chicago cops, Denny and Joey, on a harrowing journey that will test their loyalties and change their lives forever.

The critics have called Keith Huff's new play "a gritty, rich, thick poetic and entirely gripping noir tale" (Chris Jones, The Chicago Tribune); "some of the most dazzling acting you will ever see anywhere" (Hedy Weiss, The Chicago Sun-Times); and "excellent, evocative" (Variety Magazine).

A Steady Rain received huge critical acclaim over its sold out six week run last September and October at Chicago Dramatists, earning a nod on almost every Chicago theatre critic's "Top 10 Theatrical Productions of 2007" list including the Chicago Tribune, The Daily Herald, New City, UR and more. The play recently closed on Broadway with an extremely successful run staring Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig.

Evil Dead

Evil Dead - The Musical

IT'S BACK!!!

What the F@#k Was That?

That's was people all over the world have been saying after seeing Evil Dead The Musical... the only musical in the world with a splatter zone.

For those who don't know, this hilarious live stage show takes all the elements of the cult classic horror films, Evil Dead 1, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness then combines them to make one of the craziest theatrical experiences of all time.

Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It's all up to Ash (a housewares employee, turned demon killing hero), and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons are telling bad jokes... and all to music.

The songs in the show are completely off the wall as well. Titles like "All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons" and "What the F*@k was That" will have you rolling in your seats, and screaming for more and more blood.

You don't need to be a fan of Evil Dead to love this show. You don't need to be a fan of horror to love this show. You don't even need to be a fan of musicals to love this show. As long as you like having fun... this show is for you.
