Season 12

Ground Zero Theatre: Mandate

Ground Zero Theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to producing contemporary theatre not seen in Calgary.

Our mission is to develop and nurture home-grown talent in an environment where we bridge the gap between educational and professional theatre by combining established artists with up and coming artists.

From day one it has been the mission of Ground Zero Theatre to provide the City of Calgary with an alternative to the alternative. With a hand on the pulse of social and popular culture GZT has produced theatrical work unlike anything this city had ever seen. From subUrbia to Killer Joe - American Buffalo to Blue Surge - Pervert to The Black Rider, Ground Zero Theatre’s productions are innovate, dynamic and always on the edge. We were the first Canadian theatre company to independently produce Eve Ensler’s world renowned The Vagina Monologues, we created our own show: CockTales, monologues about the penis – both of which played to critical praise and sold out houses.

GZT’s directive is to also help bridge the gap between educational and professional theatre. We promote up and coming talent by combining young theatrical practitioners with already established theatre professionals and give them a stage to display their talents. In many of our productions, we have combined the two with phenomenal success. Many of our “GZT Alumni” have made the leap to larger professional stages with ease and owe a lot of their success to the opportunities GZT has provided for them.

Ground Zero Theatre has quickly become an integral part of the theatre community in Calgary. Not only are we “the stage of the future stars” but we are also a leading choice for many professional artists who are looking for a challenge to their own creativity. It is not uncommon to see an actor’s biography in a Theatre Calgary or Alberta Theatre Projects program to include a Ground Zero Theatre credit.
